We have two types of conservatives: Your conservative, and CONservative. I’m sure you get where this is going.
The Conservative is loving, and while not supporting liberal causes, is still willing to listen and will love someone no matter what. They do tend to lean right with politics, and while being Christian, they don’t force religion onto someone who doesn’t want it. These are the good kinds. You may not agree politically with them, but they make good friends, and even a good, balanced political debate.
The CONservative is not loving. Hates anything dealing with liberals, and won’t listen to anything but what they want to hear. They lean on the extreme right of the political spectrum, and while being Christians, will force their religion onto somebody who doesn’t want it. These are the same people who think that Obama is the anti-Christ, and who thinks that he is a Muslim.
I have Conservative friends. The CONservatives, however, hate me because I am liberal, and hate that I am a modern day hippie.
During my math class on Friday (note I said math class) my extremely conservative teacher and another classmate (who I’m pretty sure is borderline racist) brought up the State of the Union address. I was immediately up on my guard so as not to let my negative excitement show.
For safety, I won’t use their real names. Mr. D is the teacher, and Joshua is the other student. I tried being as nice to Joshua as I could in the past, but he was always rude to me. Mr. D, I admit. is a cool person, but I would never bring up politics. Mr. D is also the teacher who has been the subject of my earlier blog posts.
Raising the minimum wage has been a big priority for the democratic party, and statistics have shown that even 64% of republicans are supporting it too. It is a big priority for people who are working an honest job, who are not getting paid what they need for that job. Take a janitor or a waitress. A janitor cleans up all the crap leftover from students, workers, etc… and most janitors don’t get paid enough to support themselves or families. A waitress, depending on circumstances, will get paid more in tips than she would in her salary.
All of the down and dirty workers only get paid the lesser amounts, when they do the grunt work nobody else wants to.
So, to continue on with the story, Joshua starts saying some really dumb stuff. First, he says “Well, in MUSS, I have to be a democrat, and I have to fight to raise the minimum wage, and I don’t know how I’m going to.” That has to be one of the most idiotic things I’ve ever heard.
My teacher, Mr. D intervenes with “A forty year old man or woman working at McDonalds doesn’t get paid as much as a teacher might. You know why? They didn’t go to college and don’t have the skill to do anything better.” Again, really dumb.
So, it turns out I couldn’t keep myself as contained, so I gave up on calming myself. I asked him “What if that person working as a janitor or at McDonald’s didn’t have the money to pay for a college education.”
He replied with “You can find money anywhere to pay for it”
And then I asked without a required skill set, how are they to find money without going through illegal means.
This pundit decides saying that “It doesn’t matter. If you’re desperate enough to get a higher education, you’ll get it. All of these people who work those silly jobs are just lazy.”
I then asked “What about these people who get their college educations but can’t find a job, and have to work as a janitor or a waitress?”
He said that there is always a job out there for you. Always, as long as you have a college educations.
Joshua, interrupts with how raising the minimum wage will also affect inflation, and explained that prices will go up as we begin to raise the minimum wage, and that it’s bad for the economy.
Mr. D replies to him with how the people without college educations don’t deserve to get more money, and that it was just a “stupid, socialist ideas”. Then he said “those dang liberals”. Half of our class is liberal.
I really don’t like this teacher or Joshua anymore.
The sheer stupidity of this conversation was enough to almost make me leave the classroom.
“True Christianity breaks it’s rules for the salvation of man, rather than breaking man for the sake of salvation”
I know, many liberals dont like Christians. But, you arent not a true conservative or a true liberal unless you are open minded toward those without the same morals as you.
This quote is attributed to Fr. Ayman Kfouf
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
I am a liberal Christian.
I strongly dislike extremists. But, this weekend I was surrounded by several conservatives. These are the logical, non extremist, accepting conservatives. These are the people I don’t mind being around. The reason is because they are accepting.
Our speaker gave us this verse, and I realized that I am a hypocrite. I have blamed extremists and have ostracized the same people who I felt were ostracizing me. In all truth, only a small majority of people are those extreme non accepting conservatives. After being in a room full of people of opposing political views, I realized they aren’t as bad as our media makes them seem. We are just as opinionated as Fox News is toward liberals. We make the mistake of thinking we are so much better than them, but we are all the same. We judge conservatives as if they are all the extremist conservatives who are often reported about on the news. But, the logical conservative, the ones who truly follow the Holy Bible, aren’t as bad as society makes them seem. I have actually befriended many. And even with our opposing views, we still try to see everyone’s side of the story.
What makes a true conservative is only tradition. Traditional values. While I am a progressive, I can see why they aren’t as adept to change. But now, many more conservatives are becoming more liberal as they see that some, not all, but some conservative values aren’t biblical values.
Over here in Germany, it is already 2014. Pictures above are mini cupcakes I made for the occasion. Let’s please ring in the New Year positively. Let’s do our best to still provide for our families as well as strangers. Be peaceful, and enforce what is best for the majority. Do something new, and make yourself better.
Lets go and help our environment. Recycle. Bike or walk instead of driving (within reason). Or, take the public commute.
Get out and exercise. I know I definitely need to. Bike, walk, or run. Do yoga, and eat more organic foods. Take a long relaxing bath on a free day. Make it a ritual. If it is a weekend and you don’t have to work, make a special time for it.
Make a difference in the world. Smile more.
I know I’m making these things part of my life.
And when it comes to arguing your enemies, smile and listen.
I don’t like America.
After living in
Europe for about 12 of 15 years of my life, I’ve been a bystander of America. I’ve seen great things, and after many things I’ve seen here, I couldn’t be a conservative. I tried to, but I knew I was lying to myself . As I’ve grown politically aware, I’ve become short tempered. I can even start to cry by events worldwide, because there is no reason for inequality, hatred, and people who don’t care . I care.
Just earlier today, I got into an argument with my mom. She is religious, but leans left on the political spectrum. My mom saw on the news about a news anchor who came out. My mom said “She’s a pretty woman, she didn’t have to choose to be gay.” And then I lost my temper. It struck me deep, as a year and a half ago, I questioned my sexuality. I’m still not for sure. She also once said that my gay best friend was only 15, and was too young to know what he wanted. I don’t know what I want, and I didn’t choose to question myself. I didnt choose to have SAD or my current unresolved back pain. You didn’t choose your allergic reaction to certain foods, did you? Who are you to say that I am too young to know what I want. I want peace and equality, but am I too young to want that?
Sometimes, I wonder if life would be better as a clueless conservative. But, when I sit and think about it, I would prefer to cry while watching the news than to saying “no” to anthing that goes against “religious morals”.
Ignorance is bliss, but I want another kind of bliss: The kind that is helping others and improving this fucked up world we live in.
It’s Christmas day, and other holidays of which I am not fully aware of. While I could do the research, this school system only celebrates Christmas, from what I’ve seen in the past.
How are your holiday celebrations going?
For me, it doesnt feel much like Christmas, or really winter at all. Why? My current place of residencd, which is Germany, is experiencing weather that is quite peculiar for this region. It is 46 degrees outside, and just a couple of years ago, it was much colder. We have had a couple of bad, cold days, but it feels like early spring.
And conservatives say that global warming is not a big deal or issue.
Well, of course it isn’t a big deal for them. Drilling for more oil on U.S. soil and off land is important for them, saying its fine. They think those are the best and most useful forms of energy. Yet, under the Obama administration, reducing the use of fossil fuels and using solar panels and windmills has proven most effective in energy use.
Conservatives believe that a changing environment is natural. This is true, and change does occur over time. But, they also don’t believe that humans do not have any effect on our current environment.
Explain to me again that logic please?
